‘Perhaps I should have added that I spoke at length with Master Mayne,’ I stated. ‘It seems he had challenged an important man to a duel, and was determined to see it through despite his lack of skill with a sword. Given the King’s strong disapproval of duelling, they planned to go out to a remote place and fight – and you, his teacher, would stand as Mayne’s second. That’s what he told me.’

Wearing my blandest look, I waited. At first the words seemed to have no effect – then came a burst of righteous anger.

‘By the Christ, that’s a whoreson lie!’ Elms exclaimed. ‘I never heard any such intent from Mayne, nor would I have aided him. I’m a loyal subject, who obeys the law!’

‘Do you, always?’ I said, savouring my advantage. ‘It’s not what I’ve heard. Then, who would blame a man - especially if the duellist offers enough money.’

‘Lies!’ Elms repeated, though he looked flushed now. ‘And I won’t have anyone coming here with accusations…’ He broke off, frowning, and looked round at his customers who were very still, every man hanging on his words. When he turned back to me, I put on a smile and gestured to the doorway.

‘Can we not go outside to talk?’ I asked. ‘I think the rain’s holding off.’
